Senator McCain added fuel to the “gaffe” fire on Good Morning America today when he said that the situation on the “Iraq/Pakistan border” is serious and did not correct himself. This after he twice last week referred to the Czech Republic as “Czechoslovakia” (once and again) and a couple of months ago when he had to be corrected by both Joe Lieberman and Lindsay Graham for confusing Shias and Sunnis.

If Obama pulls off his foreign swing successfully while the news out of the McCain camp continues to be his gaffes on basic social studies, McCain could fritter away his lead on the “who can handle the world best” issue.

EDITORIAL: Dear Senator McCain’s Chief of Staff, it is clear that the candidate needs to spend some time refreshing his knowledge of geography. I have two recommendations that might help you going forward. First, I suggest that you replace the placemats on the Straight Talk Express with the laminated world maps you can buy for your kids at most drug stores. Second, post a map or two of the middle east and Europe up in the bathroom. Why let your boss waste all that time, when could be learning that Iran is between Iraq and Pakistan? If neither of those options appeals to Senator McCain, just keep Lieberman or Graham at his side any time the press is likely to ask him a foreign policy question.
