Contest: Name the Oklahoma City NBA Team!

Another contest from American History Y? One of the most appalling sports stories of recent years (and that’s saying a lot) is the way the NBA approved the sale of a great old franchise, the Seattle Supersonics, to a consortium of owners from Oklahoma City who swore up and down that the team would stay in Seattle. Unsurprisingly, the owners then held the city hostage by demanding hundreds of millions of tax dollars for a new stadium and threatening to move to OKC. E-mails uncovered in the ensuing lawsuit showed that the owners never intended to stay in Seattle. In a real blow to the plexis of fans everywhere, Stern and the NBA owners then approved the move to OKC and the owners reached a settlement to leave the Supersonics name, colors and history in Seattle, where the team had been for 41 years. (Does this make any sense? Seattle is the 14th largest TV market in the country and OKC is the 45th! How are things working out in Memphis for the Grizz?) This means that the Oklahoma City team, replete with star Kevin Durant, needs a new name.

What names do you suggest for the OKC NBA Team?

I’ll start us off with some suggestions: The Oklahoma City Oklahomans (go, Texans!), The Outlaws, The David Sterns, The Oklahoma Musicals, The OKC Filthy Lying Owners, The No-Way-We’re-Staying-More-Than-Ten-Years.

  1. Well, that was an awfully short-lived contest.

  2. The Oklahoma City Dunkadelics. The Dunkadelics is cool, hip, and very marketable. There are 30 NBA teams and none of them have a dunk/mascot name. The last time a team had to change names after leaving a city was in 1978 when the Buffalo Braves moved to San Diego and became the Clippers.

Welcome to OKC Dunkadelic Nation. Home of the Oklahoma City Dunkadelics, 1-877-OKC-DUNK. The Sonic-Boom in Seattle is now a Dunkadelic-Boom in Oklahoma City. The NBA in OKC is a Super Slam Dunk!

  3. Dunkadelics is clearly better than the Barons. Why the Barons? As far as I know, there is no connection between Oklahoma and minor English nobility. And it’s not an alliteration, like the Birmingham Barons (see Jordan, Michael).

  4. These are the top names i’ve heard.

    Marshals,Thunder,Wind, Energy, Bison, Barons.

  5. The best names for Oklahoma City for me are Oklahoma Centaurs (because the horse races, which are very popular in Oklahoma) (i imagine logo: wild centaur with the ball) or Oklahoma Hurricanes or Oklahoma Wreckers. From the official names i would choose Oklahoma Thunders, but Dunkadelic it’s interesting name for them to.

  6. i thank they should be the

    OKLAHOMA SCISSORS
    the state bird

  7. RUSH is plural. It can be easily marketed.ie: Rush of wind. Tornadoes. Ocean waves of water with basketball players rushing out of the break against the shores. Rush of a crowd onto a basketball court. Rush of cowboys across the Oklahoma landscape to get to the game. etc…..

  8. Well personally I like an old west name (i.e. Outlaws) and it would be fitting since like a band of outlaws you stole the SONICS…

I heard also that Thunder was considered would that mean IF THEY EVER WIN at home the sound guy would play “The Thnder Rolls”?????

  9. How about a name with double meaning…

    “The 5”

first meaning to remind Oklahomans how many of their players are on the floor…

second meaning to give a total count of fans in attendance with thier own teeth

  10. The Oklahoma City Lasers will be the best name to replace “Energy”.
